Everything You Need to Know About the Shopify Email App

What are we talking about today? I actually threw out the schedule that I already had because I impulsively decided to create a new course this week. Based on some feedback during my open office hours in the Facebook community, I decided to create a course on using the Shopify Email app. During last week's office hours, I was telling everyone how I really want to teach people how to use the Shopify Email app. The overwhelming response was, "Create this course now!" So, I was able to block off some time this week to really focus on creating that course.

Let's dive right into discussing the Shopify Email app because I know that this could help some of you if you're on the fence. Let's get right to it!

Deep Dive into Shopify Email App

The Shopify Email app is an email service provider app that you can add to your Shopify store to create email marketing campaigns and automation. You can use it to send newsletters, automated emails like a welcome sequence, thank you messages after a purchase, abandoned cart emails, and more. It’s not the same as your inbox where you receive emails; it’s specifically for sending bulk emails to your customers.

Most popular email service providers, like Klaviyo, Flodesk, Drip, ActiveCampaign, Constant Contact, Mailchimp, and MailerLite, integrate with various website platforms. However, Shopify Email is built into every Shopify store, from Basic to Plus, and doesn't require a separate website or app to manage. This integration makes it convenient and easy to use.

Who Should Use the Shopify Email App?

The Shopify Email app is ideal for business owners who:

  1. Feel Overwhelmed by Complex Platforms: If you find platforms like Klaviyo too complicated, Shopify Email is a simpler alternative.
  2. Are on a Tight Budget: You can send up to 10,000 emails for free each month. You only pay if you exceed that limit, making it cost-effective for those starting out or with smaller lists.
  3. Need to Get Started Quickly: If the thought of starting email marketing is overwhelming, Shopify Email provides a straightforward way to set up and send emails without the need for extensive training or resources.

Limitations and Comparisons of Shopify Email

While Shopify Email is user-friendly and cost-effective, it does have limitations:

  • Shopify Exclusive: It only works for Shopify stores, so if you're using another platform, this isn’t for you.
  • Basic Analytics: It offers basic analytics compared to platforms like Klaviyo, which provide more detailed data.
  • Limited Customization: The design and layout options are not as customizable as those in platforms like Flodesk.

However, these limitations don’t negate its usefulness. For many, the simplicity and integration with Shopify are significant advantages. Plus, you can always upgrade to a more robust platform as your needs grow.

Setting Up and Using Shopify Email App

Step-by-Step Setup:

  1. Install the Shopify Email App: Search for "Shopify Email" in the Shopify App Store and install it.
  2. Verify Your Email Address: Use an email address that matches your domain (e.g., yourname@yourdomain.com) to improve deliverability.
  3. Customize Your Settings: Go to the email settings in Shopify and customize your sender email, tracking options, and template branding.
  4. Create Templates: Start by creating email templates that reflect your brand. Use Shopify’s templates as a base or create your own.
  5. Send Campaigns and Automations: Use the Marketing tab in Shopify to create and send campaigns for one-time emails or set up automations for ongoing sequences like welcome emails or post-purchase follow-ups.
